Forest Clearing for Agriculture
Fri. April 11, 9-11:30am
Lunch Celebration: 12-2pm
UCAN will be clearing 2.2 acres of land to address our need for growing of vegetables, provide residents with needed space to grow vegetables and space to implement our re-entry program. Prior to clearing the two acres we have harvested all of the small native plants and trees for planting into other areas of the forest. We will clear the forest with as little disruption as possible: felling trees individually, bucking trees to use branches and stumps either in the new farming area or in fencing or in the repurposing of old structures on the farm. The 2.2 acres contains one acre of agriculture land and 1.2 acres of buffer. We will also be planting native trees and plants in the surrounding area to be food for the animals and to nurture the insects and pollinators. Volunteers will be involved in the removal of the limbs, branches, etc. for mulching, removing the trees and branches to staging areas. The land clearing will be supervised by members of the Eno River Association and Friends of the Mountain-to-Sea Trail.
