UCAN

Forest Clearing for Agriculture
Fri. April 11, 9-11:30am
Lunch Celebration: 12-2pm

Register here by April 3rd

  • What will I be doing?

UCAN will be clearing 2.2 acres of land to address our need for growing of vegetables, provide residents with needed space to grow vegetables and space to implement our re-entry program. Prior to clearing the two acres we have harvested all of the small native plants and trees for planting into other areas of the forest. We will clear the forest with as little disruption as possible: felling trees individually, bucking trees to use branches and stumps either in the new farming area or in fencing or in the repurposing of old structures on the farm. The 2.2 acres contains one acre of agriculture land and 1.2 acres of buffer. We will also be planting native trees and plants in the surrounding area to be food for the animals and to nurture the insects and pollinators. Volunteers will be involved in the removal of the limbs, branches, etc. for mulching, removing the trees and branches to staging areas. The land clearing will be supervised by members of the Eno River Association and Friends of the Mountain-to-Sea Trail.

  • Where do I go?

2080 Sawmill Creek Parkway, Durham, NC 27712

  • Where can I park?

Parking is available on site as well as on the street.

  • What should I bring/wear?

Participants should wear closed-toe shoes, and bring hat, water, and gloves (if they have them).

  • What will be provided by the host?

UCAN will provide gloves, water, snacks, axes, and any other tools that are needed.

  • Any special considerations?

This is outside work, in a wooded area that was once used for agriculture purposes.

Learn More About Urban Community AgriNomics (UCAN)

Growing Communities One Seed at a Time

UCAN’s mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of our community. Our purpose is to provide education and training on healthy lifestyles, seed-to-table food preparation and preservation, hands on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) and agriculture. They empower families and individuals by providing resources to grow their own healthy food using sustainable practices in a supportive environment. UCAN’s mission is to reduce food insecurity, reduce and/or reverse preventable health risk factors, to increase academic success and to increase exposure to career opportunities in the field of agriculture. They believe in sustainable agriculture that embraces the richness of the earth in all of its wonders. The foundation of UCAN is rooted in embracing the diversity of our total community, in creating equity, especially human equity, among disenfranchised individuals, in the acquisition of the skills and tools needed to build resiliency.

Engagement Opportunities:

Volunteers are always welcomed and needed. This is especially true now that we have a high tunnel. We need help in preparing the tunnel for planting. Ask about ways to get involved during your volunteer project!
