Walkability Study
Fri. April 4th, 9-11:30am
Lunch Celebration: 12-2pm
Why a walkability audit? Road transportation is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution in Charlotte. The City has adopted a goal that 50% of trips will be taken in a way other than driving alone by 2040. More people walking, biking, and riding public transit means fewer carbon emissions and healthier air, as well as more equitable access to opportunity. Yet most of Charlotte’s streets were designed at a time when the needs of non-drivers were not incorporated into the planning process. Walkability audits are a valuable tool to help communities (schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, etc.) begin conversations about mobility needs and share the results with community leaders.
Volunteers will support Sustain Charlotte’s efforts to make our streets safer and more equitable by assisting us with a walkability audit. We’ll walk along a pre-planned route as a group and record observations about how well the street meets the needs of all people who use it. We’ll take a closer look at the condition of sidewalks, lighting, bus stops, intersections, the ability of pedestrians to cross the street, and much more. Sustain Charlotte will use the results of the audit to help the neighborhood advocate for investments that will make the street safer and ultimately, reduce the need to drive a car.
1100 S Mint St, Suite 208, CLT 28203
There is a small parking lot behind the building. Carpooling is encouraged. You can also ride the light rail and walk 10 minutes from Carson station to our office.
Dress for the weather (hat, sunglasses, etc.), and bring a water bottle if desired.
Clipboards, audit forms, access to restrooms & water cooler before & after.
We will walk approximately 1.5 to 2 miles at a slow pace, pausing often to make observations. We will use the existing street infrastructure to walk along roads and cross intersections.
This is a rain or shine event! In the case of inclement weather, the workday and celebration will take place on Fri. April 25th (same times).
