Habitat Restoration
Fri. April 11th, 9-11:30am
Lunch Celebration: 12-2pm

Register here by April 3rd

  • What will I be doing?

The goal of this project is habitat restoration through invasive plant removal, weeding, and native planting. The site we will be working at was once filled with invasive plants, causing the banks of the Third Fork Creek to erode. Thanks to the help of the Woodcroft HOA and previous EarthShare volunteers, a large portion of this site has been cleared of invasive plants and replaced with native plants. We hope to continue removing invasive plants along the creek to make way for more natives which will help prevent erosion and create habitat for wildlife.

Volunteers will help Rah Bickley, volunteer president of the NCWF Durham Wildlife Stewards Chapter and Woodcroft HOA volunteer, remove invasive plants, weed, and plant native plants at Elderberry Wood. The work site, which Rah has named Elderberry Wood due to the presence of elderberry shrubs which popped up naturally when invasive plants were removed, is in need of a refresh. Volunteers will help weed the native plant garden to encourage the growth of native plants, and they will help plant some new native plants. They will also help continue efforts to remove invasive plants, like privet, from the creek bank.

  • Where will I be working?

1165 W Woodcroft Pkwy, Durham, NC 27707 (the work site is a very short walk along a paved greenway trail from the parking site)

  • Where can I park?

Parking is available at 4711 Hope Valley Road, Durham. Please park in the parking lot near the Ace Hardware Store. We will meet outside the store, and then take a short walk down the greenway to the work site.

  • What should I bring/wear?

Reusable water bottles, trusty tools or gloves if they have them, a hat/dress for the weather.

  • What will be provided by the host?

Gloves, tools, probably water and light snacks

  • Any special considerations?

Restrooms are not readily available for this workday. The closest restrooms are located in the shopping center where everyone will park. Please wear comfortable clothes you aren’t afraid to get dirty, and close-toed shoes. Long sleeves and pants are recommended.

  • What if it rains?

This is a rain or shine event! In the case of inclement weather, the workday and celebration will take place on Fri. April 25th (same times).

  • Any more questions?

Contact your team representative for any questions leading up to the event. For day-of questions, please contact Kara Solomon. Email: kara@ncwf.org |  Day-Of Phone: (984) 459-0558
