Highlighting this adorable bog turtle for #wildlif Highlighting this adorable bog turtle for #wildlifewednesday with @ncwildlifefed β€’ β€’ β€’ πŸ’πŸŒ„πŸ’ Bog turtles - a federally threatened species - have begun nesting. Unlike most turtles, this rare species doesn't excavate a nest in soil, but conceals its small egg clutch in a moss, grass or sedge tussock. They reside in wetlands along the Appalachian Mountains into the Blue Ridge Escarpment and parts of the North Carolina Piedmont. Their population has dwindled because of habitat loss and fragmentation, invasive species, land development and the illegal pet trade. Follow Sprout Link to read our blog to learn about conservation efforts to help bog turtles and other species.
