River Cleanup
Fri. April 4th, 9-11:30am
Lunch Celebration: 12-2pm
We’ll work together on land and in the creek to remove trash in and around Irwin Creek. There is not much trash on the park grounds, so most of this cleanup will take place in the creek with volunteers wearing waders. Irwin Creek provides essential urban natural habitat, recreation through trails and parks, and flows into the Catawba River that becomes the drinking water source for our neighbors in South Carolina. The Catawba River runs 225 miles long and encompasses 8,900 miles of waterways in the Catawba-Wateree Basin throughout 26 counties in two states (NC/SC). We are truly thankful for your time and service to enhance the health of our shared water network!
If you plan to bring young family members or friends, please note that they need to be accompanied by an adult if under 18.
Revolution Park, 2433 Revolution Pk Dr, Charlotte, NC 28208
There is plenty of parking at the park. Use the parking lot closest to the baseball fields. When you pull in, there will be a parking lot to the left and right. Our check in station will be at the end of the left hand parking lot.
Check In: Please look for the Catawba Riverkeeper tent to check in by the parking lot.
All volunteers will sign a volunteer activity waiver on site if they did not register through our volunteer system.
- Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and possibly wet. If you’re wearing waders, you will put them on instead of your shoes.
- If you plan on wading in the creek with our hip waders, please prepare appropriately: Wear pants with belt loops to help keep the waders up OR at least bring a belt or a fanny pack or something. If you don’t, it’s okay, the waders just don’t stay up great on their own.
- Bring a full water bottle (we will have water in a container to refill your water bottle), a towel and change of clothes (optional but highly recommended), and a day pack to hold your personal belongings (optional).
- All clean up materials – trash grabbers, gloves, and bags
- Waders will be available for those getting into the creek to remove trash.
- Water to refill your water bottle.
- Wrapped snacks (granola bars, peanuts, etc.)
- Sunscreen, bug spray, basic first aid, and hand sanitizer.
This is a rain or shine event! In the case of inclement weather, the workday and celebration will take place on Fri. April 25th (same times).
